Knorra inte över nätneutralitet och bredbandspris

Mobiloperatörerna är allt mer pressade av ökad datatrafik och minskade intäkter.
Olika recept diskuteras världen över när det gäller dels prissättning, dels så kallad nätneutralitet (lugn, det är inte så konstigt som det låter).
Och min inställning är klar: det är alldeles för mycket knorr här!
Vi börjar med priset på mobilt bredband.
Samtidigt som trafiken exploderar – 2009 var den dubbelt så stor som 2008 – har intäkten per megabyte rasat – sedan 2007 har det handlat om en minskning med 80 procent för Telia, och för Tre 50 procent (enligt Idg).
Visst är det en besvärlig situation för operatörerna, men i själva verket har priset gått från hutlöst till överkomligt.
Problemet har två delar.
Den ena är modellen med flat-rate som i sig är genial. Den har gjort kostnaden begriplig för konsumenter och generellt sett gjort produkten mobilt bredband säljbar. Men som vanligt finns det en lite grupp som konsumerar alldeles ”för mycket” och som spräcker kalkylen.
Det är ett hanterbart problem, eftersom det rör en mindre grupp, och operatörerna har på senare tid också hanterat det genom att sätta generösa maxnivåer för konsumtion per månad.
Där finns samtidigt ett informationsarbete att göra – att pedagogiskt förklara hur lätt det är att nå taket med dataintensiva tjänster som tv-kanalernas play-tjänster eller musiktjänster som Spotify. Det vill säga – att förklara vad abonnemanget kan användas till.
Den andra delen av problemet med bredbandspriset handlar om kostnader.
Mobiloperatörer har i alla år haft en så fet marginal på röstsamtal och sms att kostnaden för själva infrastrukturen varit i princip oväsentlig.
När det nu handlar om bredband krävs det kraftig en utbyggnad för att hantera de stora volymerna. För första gånget har det blivit viktigt att ha järnkoll på kostnaden för infrastruktur.
Telekomräven Bengt Nordström (konsult åt många av världens stora mobiloperatörer med företaget Northstream) påpekade i en intervju för ett år sedan att den avancerade kunskapen om inköp eller ”sourcing”, som idag är helt självklar inom exempelvis bilindustrin, är något helt nytt för teleoperatörer.
Med andra ord: för att kunna konkurrera måste mobiloperatörerna nu bygga ut mer och bli bättre på att pressa kostnaderna. Inget att knorra över.
Så detta kryptiska ord – nätneutralitet, det vill säga att operatörer och nätägare ska behandla all internet trafik lika.
Mobiloperatörer världen över knorrar. Kort sagt vill de ha betalt av Youtube, Spotify, Skype och andra populära gratistjänster som skapar stora dataströmmar genom deras nät.
Här osar det gnäll.
För det första: poängen med att användarna betalar för bredband, fast eller mobilt, är att operatören täcker sina kostnader och tjänar pengar. Så det faller tillbaka på den tidigare frågan om priset på bredband – håll rätt pris, sätt tak på förbrukning och bli bättre på sourcing.
För det andra: I åratal har operatörerna försökt ta betalt för egna undermåliga extratjänster. Fortfarande överlever den hutlöst dyra tjänsten sms, men annars har operatörerna inte en chans mot utbudet som idag finns på internet.
Egentligen borde operatörerna bara vara tacksamma mot Google, Spotify och andra leverantörer av gratistjänster som i slutändan gör operatörernas internetuppkopplingar mer attraktiva.
Frågan är om inte operatörerna rent av borde betala till Google och Spotify!
Återstår bara två små undantag.
Det ena är när en tjänsteleverantör har behov av särskilt hög kvalitet på överföringen genom operatörens nät för att garantera hög kvalitet på tjänsten. Det får tjänsteleverantören naturligtvis betala för. Men i de flesta fall räcker det troligen att trimma tjänsten.
Det andra är när exempelvis Telia gärna marknadsför Spotify som tjänst, men vet att datatrafiken hotar att slå i taket för användaren. Det blir då en ren förhandlingsfråga om Telia ska bjuda användaren på trafiken, eller om användaren får betala en extra avgift för mobil tillgång till tjänsten, antingen direkt till Telia eller via Spotify.
Summa sumarum. Det är en tuff bransch. Och ska affären gå ihop finns det inga andra recept än att sätta rätt pris, informera övertygande om prismodellen, erbjuda bäst tjänst och bli bättre på att hålla i kostnader, främst för infrastruktur.
Lätt att säga förstås, men det är inget att knorra över. Att ta betalt av tjänsteleverantörer på internet lär bara bli aktuellt i de få fall det finns något att förhandla om.

I dugg some of you post as I cerebrated they were extremely helpful very beneficial.
Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of ”neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune ”Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
